“Pavements Reflect a City’s Priorities”: Anand Mahindra Calls for Better Urban Roads

Industrialist Anand Mahindra has once again sparked a crucial urban development conversation—this time about the state of Indian city roads. In a post on X, the Mahindra Group chairman emphasised the need for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, arguing that well-designed pavements are more than just aesthetic elements; they are indicators of a city's commitment to its people.

Mahindra was responding to a post by @gemsofbabus, which showcased clean, tree-lined streets in Indian cities like Pune, Indore, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, highlighting how prioritising cleanliness and hygiene can elevate India's global image. While the original post celebrated these urban improvements, Mahindra took the discussion further.

In his post titled ‘Bautiful’, Mahindra wrote, “Streets like these add not just to physical safety but to mental well-being. The most important design element of all these streets are the pavements. The pavements belong to the people & they truly signal what importance a city gives to its citizens. Every municipality in the country should adopt holistic design of streets, with pavements—their size & their aesthetic— being the most highly prioritised elements…”

The reactions to Mahindra’s post were overwhelmingly supportive, with X users praising the emphasis on pedestrian-friendly infrastructure as a reflection of a city’s commitment to its citizens. However, some pointed to civic challenges, such as littering, underscoring the need for cultural shifts alongside infrastructure improvements. Others called for influential figures like Mahindra to actively contribute to cleaner roads, amplifying the conversation on urban livability.

Despite these discussions, concerns about the quality of city roads in India persist. Poor road conditions, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, and traffic congestion remain significant challenges, as noted in urban design studies and various reports.

Mahindra’s advocacy aligns with growing calls for holistic urban planning, including the pedestrian-only zones to create safer, healthier, and more aesthetically pleasing Indian cities. This movement underscores a national push for smarter, people-centric urban development, gaining traction on social media and beyond.
