The Mom Who Flies to Work Every Day—And Saves Money Doing It!

In today's fast-paced world, the concept of work-life balance often feels like a distant dream. However, Racheal Kaur, an Indian-origin mother of two living in Malaysia, has turned this dream into reality with an extraordinary daily routine. Dubbed a "Super Commuter," Kaur's story is making waves as she flies to work five days a week, managing to save money and spend quality time with her children.

Racheal Kaur is an Assistant Manager in Finance Operations at AirAsia, and in a recent interview with CNA (Channel News Asia), she shared the details of her unique lifestyle. What sets her apart is her daily commute from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, a journey of nearly 400 km each way. Instead of battling traffic jams or crowded trains, Kaur boards a flight every morning and evening.

This routine began in early 2024 when Kaur sought a better way to balance her career and family life. Previously, she rented a home in Kuala Lumpur to be closer to her office, only returning to Penang once a week. However, this arrangement took a toll on her, as she felt the need to be more present in her children's lives.

Kaur wakes up at 4 a.m. every weekday to prepare for her commute. By 5 a.m., she is on her way to Penang Airport, catching a 5:55 a.m. flight to Kuala Lumpur. She reaches her office by 7:45 a.m., ready to tackle the workday. After completing her tasks, she boards an evening flight back to Penang, arriving home around 8 p.m. to spend time with her family.

Surprisingly, Kaur's unconventional commute has proven to be more cost-effective than her previous living arrangement. Earlier, she spent around $474 per month on rent and other expenses. Now, her monthly travel costs have been reduced to $316. This has allowed her to save money while also being closer to her children.

Moreover, AirAsia supports Kaur’s unique approach, recognizing the importance of work-life balance. While she admits that waking up early can be exhausting, the moment she sees her children, all her tiredness disappears. Kaur maximizes her time by listening to music and appreciating nature during her flights, turning her commute into a form of "me time". She also values the face-to-face communication and collaboration she experiences in the office, allowing her to focus fully on work during office hours and dedicate her evenings to her family.
