The Wadia Group: India’s OG Business Empire That Built Ships, Snacks, and Style

The Wadia Group, founded in 1736 by Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia, holds the distinction of being the oldest business house in India. Originating in Surat, the company initially specialised in shipbuilding and secured contracts with the British East India Company, constructing over 355 ships, including notable vessels like HMS Minden and HMS Trincomalee. The establishment of the Bombay dry dock in 1750 marked a significant milestone, as it was the first dry dock in Asia, solidifying Bombay, now Mumbai, as a crucial maritime hub for British colonial activities.

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Wadia family amassed considerable wealth and influence. Their ventures expanded beyond shipbuilding into textiles, with Bombay Dyeing established in 1879, and food production through Britannia Industries, founded in 1918. The family maintained a strong presence in various sectors, including real estate and chemicals, with the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Limited being one of the oldest publicly traded companies in India, founded in 1863.

Today, the Wadia Group operates as a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning several industries. Bombay Dyeing is a leading textile manufacturer known for its bed and bath products, which have consistently paid dividends for over 125 years. Britannia Industries is one of India’s top food brands, recognised for its wide range of bakery products consumed by millions daily. The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation is engaged in plantations and healthcare products and has evolved significantly since its inception.

Under the leadership of Nusli Wadia, Lovji's descendant, the group continues to thrive while adapting to modern market demands. The Wadia family also emphasises philanthropy, contributing to educational institutions and healthcare initiatives across India.

As of 2025, the Wadia Group remains a testament to enduring legacy and innovation, with a net worth estimated at around 7.90 billion dollars. It continues to be an influential player in India's industrial landscape while honouring its rich historical roots.
