Ukraine faced a brutal attack from Russia, just a day after the United States cut off crucial intelligence support. Moscow launched an overwhelming 194 drones and nearly 70 rockets targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Among these were 43 cruise missiles, including eight Kalibr-class missiles, and three Iskander ballistic missiles. Without American satellite imagery and the US-made Patriot interceptor system to defend itself, Ukraine was left vulnerable.
Though Ukrainian forces fought back fiercely, downing 134 incoming projectiles—including 25 cruise missiles and all eight Kalibrs—Russia’s ballistic missiles traveled at five times the speed of sound.
The result was devastating, as Ukraine’s defences, now weaker without US intelligence, couldn’t fully stop the attack. Local media reported five deaths in the overnight assault, but the true toll may be much higher.
Energy Minister German Galushchenko revealed that Russia’s aim was clear: destroy Ukraine’s energy and gas infrastructure.
“Russia is trying to hurt ordinary Ukrainians by shelling energy and gas production facilities, leaving us without power and heating,” he said.
This attack, just one of many in the ongoing war, continues the pattern of targeting civilian infrastructure. Ukraine’s power grid and gas systems were hit hard, causing widespread damage in several regions.
The attack came on the heels of a crisis summit, where European Union leaders decided to ramp up defence spending, shaken by the growing prospect that the US might disengage from supporting Ukraine.
Despite the weakening of US-Ukraine ties, the talks with Kyiv are still on track to try and negotiate a ceasefire with Russia, according to Washington.
As the missiles rained down, Kharkiv was one of the hardest-hit cities. Four people were wounded when a Russian strike hit civilian infrastructure, including a woman who was rescued from rubble and rushed to receive medical care.
In another part of the city, cars were set on fire when a private company was targeted. Meanwhile, a fire broke out after a missile strike in the Odesa region, but no injuries were reported.
Ukraine’s military and civilians are continuing to endure these relentless strikes, but the absence of US intelligence raises serious concerns.
