Han Duck-Soo reinstated as acting South Korean President after impeachment struck down

South Korea’s Constitutional Court overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, and reinstated him as acting leader on Monday.

Han, who is South Korea's No. 2 official, was also reinstated to the role of acting president. When he arrived at the government complex in Seoul, Han said the court had made a "wise decision."

The court has not yet ruled on the separate impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Han also urged South Korean people to come together during the ongoing turmoil over Yeol's impeachment.

Han became acting president of South Korea after Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly over his December 3 imposition of martial law that triggered a massive political crisis.

But Han was impeached by the assembly as well in late December after political strife with opposing lawmakers.

The unprecedented impeachments intensified a political divide and deepened worries about the country’s diplomatic and economic activities.

Han Duck-soo pledged to focus on the "national interest". Referring to the U.S. Trump administration’s tariffs policy, Han told reporters "safeguarding" South Korea's interests would be a priority.
