An old video of Indian-origin comedian Ram Adithya Arangi handling a Portuguese heckler with sharp humor has resurfaced and gone viral. During a stand-up show, the heckler questioned Arangi’s knowledge of Portugal, prompting him to reply, "Yes, can we all say thank you, Portugal? Thank you for discovering India!" He humorously referenced Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India in 1498, which marked the beginning of Portuguese colonial influence and control over Indian trade routes.

Portuguese rule in Goa, which lasted over 450 years, was marked by economic exploitation, forced conversions, and cultural suppression. The Portuguese sought to dominate the spice trade and spread Christianity, often resorting to harsh methods to maintain control. The Goa Inquisition , an extension of the Portuguese Inquisition, was notorious for its brutality. It aimed to enforce Catholic orthodoxy through torture and execution of those accused of heresy or refusing to convert. Hindu temples were destroyed, and local traditions were suppressed as part of the colonial strategy to impose Western religious and cultural norms.

Arangi softened the historical critique with humor, saying, "Let’s be honest, they’re the only kind of white people who figured out how to use the spices. So I respect you guys. You’re like cutie pie colonizers." His sharp blend of humor and historical commentary drew laughter and applause from the audience.

The video, originally recorded in 2023, recently resurfaced and quickly gained traction on social media. Fans praised Arangi’s comedic timing and his ability to address sensitive historical issues with charm and wit. His clever handling of Vasco da Gama’s legacy and the complexities of Portuguese rule in Goa resonated widely, sparking both laughter and reflection.
