Google just dropped the Pixel 9a—should Apple be worried?

Google has finally launched the Pixel 9a, its most affordable Pixel 9 series phone, priced at ₹49,999. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone 16e, introduced earlier this year, starts at ₹59,900. Both claim to bring premium features at a lower cost, but they take very different approaches. So, does the Pixel 9a deliver better value, or is Apple’s iPhone 16e still the one to beat?

Display: Smooth scrolling or premium build?

The Pixel 9a boasts a 6.3-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, making animations feel ultra-smooth. The iPhone 16e, however, sticks to a smaller 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR screen with a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. Pixel users will enjoy a more fluid experience, especially for gaming.

With a peak brightness of 1,800 nits, the Pixel 9a also outshines the iPhone 16e’s 1,200 nits, making it easier to use outdoors. However, Apple’s Ceramic Shield offers better durability than the Pixel’s Gorilla Glass 3.

Performance & AI: Power verses practicality

The iPhone 16e runs on Apple’s powerful A18 chip, but Apple Intelligence—its much-hyped AI—isn’t available in India yet. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9a packs Google’s Tensor G4 chip, bringing AI-powered features like Magic Editor and Best Take right out of the box.

Cameras: Versatility or simplicity?

The Pixel 9a features a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide lens, offering more flexibility. The iPhone 16e sticks to a single 48MP sensor, which Apple markets as a "2-in-1" system with 2x zoom. While Apple’s software processing is top-tier, the Pixel’s AI-powered tools like Magic Eraser and Unblur give it an edge.

Battery & charging

Google claims the Pixel 9a’s 5,100mAh battery lasts over 30 hours, while Apple rates the iPhone 16e for 26 hours of video playback. The Pixel also supports faster 23W wired charging compared to the iPhone’s 20W.

Verdict: Which one should you pick?

For a lower price, the Pixel 9a offers a better display, camera versatility, and AI features. But if you’re tied to the Apple ecosystem, the iPhone 16e remains a solid—though pricier—option.

For pure value? The Pixel 9a might just be the better deal.
