WhatsApp: End-to-End Encryption, but Metadata Concerns

One of WhatsApp’s biggest security advantages is that every message is end-to-end encrypted by default. This means that no one—including WhatsApp itself—can read your messages. The encryption protocol is developed by Signal, one of the most trusted privacy-focused apps.

However, there’s a catch—WhatsApp collects metadata, which includes details like who you chat with, how often, and at what times. While it doesn’t store the actual content of your messages, this metadata is still valuable for tracking user behavior. And here’s the kicker: WhatsApp shares this metadata with Meta (formerly Facebook), raising concerns about privacy.

Telegram: More Control, But Encryption Isn’t Default

Telegram is often marketed as a privacy-first app, but its default settings tell a different story. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram does NOT encrypt all chats end-to-end by default. Instead, most conversations rely on server-side encryption, which means Telegram itself technically has access to your messages.

If you want full encryption, you have to manually enable Secret Chats, which offer end-to-end encryption, self-destructing messages, and screenshot detection. However, if you’re willing to tweak settings and use Secret Chats, Telegram gives you more control over self-destructing messages and additional privacy features.
