The government is introducing a regulation to limit AC temperature settings between 20°C and 28°C, aiming to boost energy efficiency.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the move, calling it a first-of-its-kind experiment to standardize temp settings across the country.
You won’t be able to cool your room below 20°C or heat it beyond 28°C — this will apply to homes, offices, and even vehicles.
Officials cited rising global temperatures and surging use of cooling systems as the reasons behind the restriction.
Most ACs today allow temperatures as low as 16°C. This rule overrides that flexibility in favor of a uniform, energy-saving range.
The rule is expected to: - Cut excess electricity use - Lower household power bills - Reduce pressure on the power grid
In 2020, BEE mandated a default AC temperature of 24°C. Offices were advised to maintain settings between 24°C and 25°C.
The government has not announced an exact date yet, but implementation is expected soon, as per Minister Khattar’s statement.
By regulating AC use, the government hopes to encourage responsible energy habits and support climate change mitigation efforts.
