Why is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated?

This day marks the descent of River Ganga from heaven to Earth, known as Gangavataran, to purify the souls and wash away sins.

Spiritual Meaning of Gangavataran

Ganga symbolizes divine purity and salvation. Her descent signifies the mercy of the divine and liberation from karmic debts.

Significance in Hindu Beliefs

Bathing in the Ganga on this day is believed to wash away ten sins (Dus = ten, Hara = destroyer), hence the name Dussehra.

Rituals of Ganga Dussehra

Devotees perform holy bath (snan) in the Ganga at sunrise, followed by Ganga Aarti, Deep daan (lamp offerings), and mantra chanting.

Gangavataran Puja Vidhi

For Gangavataran Puja, offer flowers and incense, chant Ganga stotra or Ashtak, perform aarti with a diya, and donate essentials to the needy.

Celebrations Across India

Grand festivities take place in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and other Ganga riverbanks with spiritual fervour and mass prayers.

Message for Devotees

On Ganga Dussehra, let us honour Mother Ganga by keeping rivers clean and embracing spiritual and ecological responsibility.
