On June 27, 2025, the sacred Rath Yatra returns to Puri — a grand chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
The deities travel from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in massive wooden chariots, pulled by thousands of devotees.
Yatra begins with Rath Snana, where deities are bathed with 108 pots of holy water followed by Rath Pratistha, the sanctification of the new chariots.
After 9 days at Gundicha Temple, deities return during Bahuda Yatra. Festival ends with Niladri Vijaya on July 5, when the chariots are dismantled.
As per Drik Panchang, the holy Dwitiya Tithi begins at 1:24 PM on June 26 and ends at 11:19 AM on June 27, marking the sacred window for celebration.
The Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s visit to his birthplace — a ritual of return, purification, and divine reunion with His devotees.
From kings to commoners, all pull the chariots. The Chhera Panhara ritual, where the King of Puri sweeps the chariot path, shows equality before God.
Skanda Purana praises the Yatra as the greatest of Lord Jagannath's 12 annual journeys. Witnessing it is believed to cleanse sins & bring blessings.
Each deity has a unique handcrafted chariot: Jagannath (16 wheels), Balabhadra (14), and Subhadra (12), rich in devotion and symbolism.
The event draws massive crowds. Book travel early, prepare for humid weather, and follow local advisories to witness this spiritual spectacle.
Rath Yatra is more than a festival — it’s a living tradition that binds generations through faith, unity, and the spirit of devotion.
The celebration begins with Rath Yatra and concludes with Niladri Bijay on July 5, marking the divine return of the deities to the Jagannath Temple.
