After a stellar 13-year journey, Glenn Maxwell has retired from One Day cricket, closing the chapter on one of the most exciting white-ball careers.
Maxwell played 149 ODIs, scored nearly 4,000 runs, and took 77 wickets. His explosive batting and athletic fielding made him a game-changer.
His epic 201* against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, while battling cramps, will go down as one of cricket's greatest innings under pressure.
Among players with 2,000+ runs, Maxwell retires with the highest ever ODI strike rate – an astonishing 126.70.
“I started to realise that if I don’t have perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that,” he said.
The 36-year-old had long hinted at physical strain. He made his decision during the 2025 Champions Trophy after a series of tough matches.
“I think it’s time to start planning for people in my position... hopefully they get enough of a lead-in,” Maxwell said on The Final Word podcast.
Maxwell will continue to play T20 internationals and hasn’t retired from first-class cricket. His white-ball magic isn't done yet.
From unforgettable knocks to insane fielding brilliance, Maxwell redefined the role of an ODI all-rounder—fearless, fun, and pure entertainment.
With World Cup trophies in 2015 and 2023, Maxwell walks away from ODIs as a champion, an icon, and a once-in-a-generation cricketer.
