Apple is making a decisive shift in its global strategy—away from China and toward India. In March 2025 alone, India shipped 3.1 million iPhones to the U.S., marking a staggering 219% year-on-year increase. Previously, 82% of Apple’s Indian exports went to the U.S.; by March, that figure had surged to 97.6%.
This isn’t just a temporary pivot. It’s a long-term transition. Foxconn and Tata are scaling operations rapidly. AirPods are now being built in Telangana. India’s role has evolved from contract manufacturing to a full-fledged ecosystem, generating over ₹1.5 lakh crore in exports and creating 2 lakh jobs.
India isn’t Apple’s Plan B—it’s becoming Plan A.
As India’s manufacturing capacity grows, a geopolitical shift is taking shape—delivered in an iPhone box. Former President Donald Trump has expressed concerns, reportedly telling Tim Cook that he’s “not thrilled.” But Apple has made its intentions clear: the company is staying committed to India.
Apple’s presence in India isn’t just about exports. Domestic growth is strong, too. In the March 2025 quarter, iPhone shipments in India grew 25% year-on-year, pushing Apple’s market share to 8%, according to CyberMedia Research. That quarter also marked a sales record, as confirmed by CEO Tim Cook.
Looking ahead, Cook has stated that starting in the June quarter, the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. will be made in India. China will continue to produce devices, but primarily for non-U.S. markets, as tariff-related uncertainties persist.
While Washington debates tariffs and political leaders call for manufacturing to return home, Apple has already moved forward. Its strategy is clear—India is the future.
