Dhirubhai Ambani, born in a modest family in Chorwad, Gujarat, left school after 10th to support his family

Dhirubhai Ambani, born on December 28, 1932, in Chorwad, Gujarat, rose from humble beginnings to become one of India's most iconic business figures.

First Entrepreneurial Step

His journey began in a modest family where he dropped out of school after the 10th grade to support his family through various odd jobs. At just 16, he took his first entrepreneurial step by selling chaat-pakoda to pilgrims at Mount Girnar, showcasing his early knack for business.

Life In Aden

At the age of 17, Dhirubhai moved to Aden, Yemen, where he worked as a dispatch clerk for A. Besse & Co., earning ₹300 a month. This experience proved invaluable; he frequented upscale hotels to learn from wealthy businessmen, absorbing knowledge that would later fuel his ambitions. In 1958, he returned to India and founded Reliance Commercial Corporation, initially focusing on spice trading.

The Expansion Of Vision

Dhirubhai's vision quickly expanded. By 1961, he shifted to yarn trading and established Reliance Textile Industries Limited in 1966. His strategic foresight led him to diversify into the petrochemical sector in the 1980s, recognising its potential for growth in India's industrial landscape. This diversification laid the groundwork for Reliance Industries' transformation into a conglomerate.

Reliance Industries: Public Listing

A pivotal moment in Dhirubhai's career came in 1977 when he took Reliance public. This move democratised the Indian stock market, allowing average investors to participate in the burgeoning economy.

His charisma and ability to inspire trust attracted thousands of small investors to Reliance's Initial Public Offering (IPO), marking a significant shift in India's financial landscape.

The Richest Indian

By 1986, Dhirubhai Ambani became the richest man in India as Reliance Industries emerged as a household name. His relentless pursuit of excellence and innovative business strategies propelled the company to new heights, making it one of the largest private sector enterprises in India.

The Visionary, The Inspiration

Dhirubhai's legacy extends beyond his wealth; he is remembered as a visionary who transformed India's corporate landscape. His story is an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and serves as a testament to what can be achieved through hard work and determination. Even after his passing in 2002, Dhirubhai Ambani's influence continues to resonate in the business world, making him an enduring symbol of success and ambition in India.
