Started in 1927 by the Hajoori family, Sosyo is one of India's oldest soft drinks, refreshing generation after generation.

Sosyo is an iconic Indian soft drink brand, introduced in 1927 by the Hajoori family in Surat, Gujarat. It is recognised as one of the oldest cold drink brands in India, primarily known for its unique citrus-based flavours and fruit juice-infused sodas. The brand has a rich history intertwined with India's independence movement and has evolved significantly over the decades.

Historical Background
The drink was originally introduced as "Whisky No" by the Hajoori family during a time when British soft drinks dominated the market. Later, it was rebranded to "Socio," derived from the Latin word "Socious," meaning friend or ally, symbolising a call for Indians to support a home-grown product instead of foreign brands. Due to local pronunciation, it was later renamed "Sosyo" in 1957 to better resonate with consumers.

Swadeshi Movement Connection
Sosyo emerged as part of the Swadeshi movement, which encouraged the use of Indian-made products. The Hajoori family initially marketed the non-alcoholic beverage to provide an alternative to British drinks like Vimto. This strategy helped establish Sosyo's foothold in Surat and beyond.

Ingredients and Flavours:
Sosyo is a non-alcoholic fizzy beverage, which contains apple and grape. The brand boasts a wide variety of flavours, appealing to a wide range of tastes. It is marketed as a refreshing drink suitable for various occasions and is particularly popular in Gujarat and surrounding states.

Market Presence:
Despite its regional popularity, Sosyo has plans for national expansion. As of recent reports, the brand aims to increase its market share beyond Gujarat, targeting major cities across India with the slogan "Apna Desh Apna Drink" (Our Country, Our Drink). Currently, it has a significant presence in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

Acquisition and Growth:
In January 2023, Reliance Consumer Products acquired a 50% stake in Sosyo Hajoori Beverages, signalling a strategic move towards expanding its market reach. The company has also seen substantial growth in sales under the leadership of Abbas Hajoori and his son Aliasgar Hajoori, who have modernised branding and marketing strategies to appeal to younger consumers.

Production Facilities:
Sosyo operates 18 manufacturing units across India and has established a distribution network, including 16 franchiselettes across the country. The company also exports to countries such as the UAE, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and more, with plans for further expansion.

Conclusion
Sosyo stands out as a testament to India's rich beverage heritage. Its journey from a local soft drink to an aspiring national brand reflects not only the evolution of consumer preferences but also the resilience and innovation of Indian entrepreneurship. As it continues to grow under new partnerships and strategic initiatives, Sosyo aims to solidify its place in the competitive landscape of soft drinks both domestically and internationally.
