The biggest story this week was the terror attack in Kashmir. At least 26 people were killed near the town of Pahalgam. 6 terrorists went to a tourist hotspot near Pahalgam and started shooting male visitors. The attackers were from a group called ‘The Resistance Front’, or TRF, which is an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
INDIA-PAKISTAN TENSIONS ON THE BOIL
Tensions between India and Pakistan have risen to a boiling point after the Pahalgam attack. India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty, which governs water sharing between the two neighbours. It has also stopped issuing visas to Pakistan nationals, and told Indian nationals in Pakistan to return.
PAKISTAN SUSPENDS SIMLA 1972 AGREEMENT
Pakistan has responded to India’s diplomatic moves by suspending all bilateral agreements. This includes the 1972 Simla Agreement, which established the Line of Control, the de facto border between the two nations in Kashmir.
TRUMP CONDEMNS PUTIN AFTER RUSSIA STRIKES KYIV
The Russia-Ukraine peace talks are facing a new hurdle. US President Donald Trump issued a rare rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. This is after Russia launched an overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, which say 12 people killed. Trump said he was ‘not happy’ with the strikes, and called them ‘not necessary’.
And Pope Francis died on Monday at the age of 88. He died of a stroke, on Monday, after having performed Easter services the previous day. The Pope’s final rites are underway. After he is laid to rest, a Papal Conclave will begin in May, to choose his successor.
