Israel’s new ground offensive in Gaza, and their 10-week-long total blockade of the strip, have drawn international condemnation. More and more nations are speaking up after seeing that the Israeli actions could lead to the starvation of millions of ordinary Palestinians in Gaza. Among those speaking out are nations that were so far considered staunch allies of the Israeli cause, like the right-wing Italian government of Giorgia Meloni.
Last week, Italy’s opposition took Meloni to task, for what they perceive to be her soft stance on Netanyahu’s assault on Gaza. The opposition’s takedown was met with applause in parliament, and it went viral on social media. The Italian opposition spokesperson also criticized Meloni for not condemning the killing of 18,000 children in Gaza, and not asking for sanctions on Israel like she had on Russia.
It seems like the criticism hit its mark, because a few days after the showdown parliament, the Italian government spoke up against Israel. Foreign minister Antonio Tajani said it was time for Italy to tell Israel 'that's enough'. He said his government no longer wanted to see the Palestinian population suffer. Tajani called on Netanyahu to stop the attacks, secure a ceasefire, free the hostages, and "leave in peace a people who are victims of Hamas."
Israel has chosen not to heed Italy’s plea, and gone ahead with its new offensive in Gaza. Will the Italian government heed this call, and step up pressure on Israel? Will other nations in Europe come together to stop the new assault on Gaza? Or will Israel continue killing Palestinians with impunity, while Europe turns a blind eye?
