Why is Trump welcoming White South African ‘Refugees’ to the US?

About 50 White South Africans arrived in Washington DC on Sunday and were welcomed as refugees by the US government. US President Donald Trump says that the members of the Afrikaner minority are “being killed” and facing “a genocide”.

South Africa has a big problem with violent crime overall. Police data shows that almost 7,000 murders took place in just the last 3 months of 2024. During that same period of time, about 12 murders were linked to the farming community.

South Africa doesn’t record crimes on the basis of race, but most farmers in South Africa are White. White South Africans make up about 7% of the country’s population, and own almost 80% of the private agricultural land there. If we assume that all the 12 farmers who were murdered between October and December 2024 were White, that comes to 12 out of about 7,000 murders in that period.

But Trump believes that the group is being systematically targeted on the basis of race, which is why he has offered them fast-track refugee status in the US.
