An overnight Russian missile attack on Ukraine has reportedly claimed the lives of five while injuring many. Fires broke out in residential areas, and the entrance to a metro station – also serving as a bomb shelter – was destroyed.

Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s Military administration, said on Telegram, “The Russians’ style is unchanged - to hit where there may be people.”

While no comments have been released from the Kremlin, both warring governments have denied targeting civilians since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022.

Civilian casualties have, however, increased since then, the majority reported Ukrainian.

The Shevchenkivskyi district in the Ukrainian Capital, a bustling area, reported four deaths after the entrance to a high-rise apartment building was destroyed. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that more people were still under the rubble.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service released a series of photos showcasing a rescue operation retrieving people buried under the rubble.

As a part of a wave attack launched by Russia, an estimated six of Kyiv’s ten districts were targeted, including residential buildings.

Last week, one of the deadliest attacks on Kyiv with scores of drones dispatched on the city, killed an estimated 28 people, while leaving over 150 wounded. Nearly 30 sites were hit during this attack.

Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said in response to the latest attack, “We very much hope that the death toll will not increase” as rescue efforts remain underway. The damage to surrounding vehicles resulted in various mechanical parts flying and creating small fires in neighbouring residential buildings."

Volunteers from across the city are working with rescue teams to remove glass and other hazardous materials from the street, while also collecting fallen tree branches and other debris.

Bystanders remained shocked at the barrage. The Ukrainian air force confirmed that a total of 352 drones and 16 missiles were fired overnight, primarily targeting the city of Kyiv.
