The saree, a timeless symbol of Indian heritage, is making powerful waves on the global stage. The Cannes Film Festival has been a witness to Indian fashion heritage for over the years as many Indian celebrities and influencers have embraced the six-yard wonder that is a saree with pride.

From traditional weaves to modern drapes, the saree has evolved without losing its roots, effortlessly merging elegance with modernity.

Here are some celebrity saree looks from Cannes that are sure to bowl you over.

Aishwarya Rai and sarees: A love affair

Cannes 2002 wasn’t just the year Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her debut at the prestigious film festival; it was also the moment she made saree go International. Dressed in a bright yellow Neeta Lulla saree paired with heavy gold jewellery, Aishwarya walked the red carpet like a queen, for her film ‘Devdas.’

She was accompanied by Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Sonam Kapoor proves sarees are high fashion at Cannes

Known for her fearless fashion choices, Sonam Kapoor has reimagined the saree in unexpected ways at Cannes. Among her many looks, fans especially loved her modern Masaba Gupta saree look, a hybrid look that married Indian draping with Western tailoring.

Kapoor’s three-piece saree featured a blouse, cropped pants and a half jacket that converts into a pallu.

The designer worked with a self-striped neoprene fabric and tone-on-tone sequins to create an understated yet striking ensemble.

Deepika Padukone’s underappreciated saree moments

Deepika Padukone’s Cannes journey is often remembered for her glamorous gowns, but those in the know remember her 2010 debut differently. Contrary to popular belief, she graced the red carpet in a stunning cream and gold Rohit Bal saree—a look that was regal, refined, and unmistakably Indian.

Fast forward to 2022, and Deepika, now a Cannes jury member, returned in an opulent ivory Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla saree. With statement jewellery and kohl-rimmed eyes, she looked like a contemporary goddess. These moments underscored that Deepika is the OG desi girl.

Vidya Balan’s Sabyasachi sarees

When Vidya Balan served as a jury member at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, she brought not just her cinematic sensibilities but also a powerful fashion message. Dressed in a classic Sabyasachi saree, she exuded grace.

Her saree was the perfect love letter to Indian artisanship!

Nandita Das: The saree loyalist

Never one to follow trends, Nandita Das stays true to her roots by embracing handwoven sarees that reflect India’s rich textile heritage. In 2017, she turned heads in a peach Anavila saree. In other visits to Cannes, Nandita did not let go of her one true love – sarees.
