The race for Bihar’s Chief Ministership is turning into an aggressive contest. With the state witnessing a three-way battle between the BJP-led NDA, the INDIA bloc and Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj party, the issue of unemployment has taken centre stage.
On Thursday, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav from the INDIA bloc made a big promise.
Addressing a press conference, Tejashwi Yadav said, "We are going to make a historic announcement today. Many people wanted to know how we want to take Bihar forward. For 20 years, the current government never realised that unemployment is the biggest issue." He added "Within 20 days of coming into power we will make a law on employment and within 20 months in power, all the households who doesn’t have government employment will be given one.”
Unemployment has been one of the key themes of this year’s Bihar elections. And the statistics show why.
According to the Periodic Labour Force, the unemployment rate in the age group of 15 and above jumped from 7% in the 2017-18 period to 9.8% in the 2018-2019 period. The rise in the unemployment rate comes even though there has been a decrease in unemployment in the state in recent years.
This is precisely why most political parties have been promising jobs to Bihar's unemployed youth.
