Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Japan, marking his first visit to the country in nearly seven years as he looks to boost bilateral ties. Following this, PM Modi will head to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin and is expected to hold bilateral meetings with China’s Xi Jinping on the sidelines.
Over 40 dead after heavy rains in North India
Heavy rainfalls in North India have wreaked havoc over the last couple of days. Notably, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained shut for traffic for the third consecutive day due to multiple landslides triggered by the heavy rains.
The death toll in the rain-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir rose to 41 on Wednesday, with the Vaishno Devi landslide accounting for 34 of the lives lost.
Journalists among those killed in Israeli double strike on Gaza hospital
To the Middle East now and at least 20 people, including five journalists working for the international media, were killed on Tuesday after Israel’s double strike on Nasser hospital in Gaza’s Khan Yunis region.
Footage of the dastardly attack shows a second strike hitting rescuers who had arrived to help those targeted by the first attack. The IDF later said it was aiming to destroy a camera being used by Hamas near the hospital but reiterated that six of the individuals killed were terrorists.
Trump meets South Korean President at White House
And finally from the US - Trump welcomed South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House on Monday.
Even as Trump spoke warmly about South Korea and its people, he added that he’d like to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “this year”, but told reporters he’s not sure it will happen because he’s “meeting a lot of people”.
Trump wants to revamp H1-B visa rules
More importantly, Trump is looking to revamp the H1-B visa rules to prioritise American jobs and Indians better watch out. His administration wants to revoke the white collared work visas for foreigners who fall below a salary bracket.
With over 70% of these visas held by Indians, the new rules could mean a majority of them losing their jobs.
