India’s recent ODI series loss to New Zealand at home was more than just a surprising result. It marked the first time in 37 years that India have lost a home ODI series to New Zealand, and the outcome offered several important lessons about the current state of the team.

Here are five major takeaways from a series that raised as many questions as it answered.

Virat Kohli Remains Irreplaceable in ODIs

At 37, Virat Kohli continues to be India’s most reliable ODI batter. In his last seven ODI innings, Kohli has scored three centuries and six 50-plus scores, underlining his unmatched consistency.

His century in the series evoked memories of Sachin Tendulkar’s famous 175, showcasing the same hunger and control. In ODI run chases, Kohli now boasts 10 centuries, over 2,100 runs, and an average of 62. While comparisons with legends will always exist, Kohli’s dominance in modern ODIs stands in a league of its own.

Is Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI Future in Doubt?

Ravindra Jadeja’s role in the ODI setup looks increasingly uncertain. After being dropped earlier and then recalled against South Africa, Jadeja struggled again in this series.

In his last six ODIs, he has taken just one wicket, with a bowling average of 298. While he contributed 99 runs with the bat, India consistently failed to take wickets in the middle overs when he was bowling. At the highest level, that lack of impact is hard to overlook.

Gambhir’s Faith in Harshit Rana Pays Off

Few selections were debated as much as Harshit Rana’s inclusion, but the bowling all-rounder delivered when it mattered. Across three matches, Rana picked up six wickets, scored 83 runs, and played a crucial cameo in the opening game.

His performances justified Gautam Gambhir’s backing, especially with Rana slotting in effectively as a No. 8 who contributes with both bat and ball.

The Hardik Pandya Void Was Clearly Felt

India missed Hardik Pandya badly in this series. His unique value as a pace-bowling all-rounder was evident, particularly in the middle overs.

Although Nitish Reddy scored a fifty in the final ODI, he was unable to make an impact with the ball. Hardik’s absence left a clear imbalance, reinforcing how vital he is to India’s ODI combination.

Are India Over-Reliant on Kuldeep Yadav?

With Jadeja struggling, much of the wicket-taking responsibility fell on Kuldeep Yadav. After taking nine wickets against South Africa, Kuldeep managed only three wickets against New Zealand.
When Kuldeep didn’t strike, New Zealand controlled the middle overs, a phase that ultimately decided the series.

Looking Ahead

While the defeat was disappointing, it provided valuable clarity. India now have a clearer picture of what needs addressing before future ODI assignments, especially balance, middle-over wickets, and all-round depth.
