A sweet shop in Lucknow has made headlines by crafting India’s largest gujiya, measuring 25 inches and weighing 6 kg, in celebration of Holi 2025. The monumental treat, dubbed the “Maha Kumbh Gujiya,” has earned a prestigious spot in the India Book of Records, marking a historic moment for the city’s culinary heritage.
Kshitij Gupta, the Marketing Head of the sweet shop, shared the inspiration behind the creation: “Many festivals across India are being celebrated, and this year, we had the Maha Kumbh, a spiritually significant event in Prayagraj. We wanted to dedicate something close to people’s hearts, blending the joy of Holi with the grandeur of Maha Kumbh. Hence, we prepared this extraordinary gujiya.” The Maha Kumbh, held quadrennially in 2025, draws millions to Prayagraj for its sacred river confluence, inspiring this unique festive offering.
Pramil Dwivedi, Executor of the India Book of Records, confirmed the record-breaking feat, stating, “This gujiya breaks all the records. When the owner claimed so, we conducted thorough research and found that such a gujiya had never been prepared earlier.” The golden, crispy pastry—traditionally filled with khoya, dried fruits, and coconut—symbolises prosperity and joy, resonating deeply with Holi’s spirit.
This isn’t the first time Lucknow has innovated with gujiyas. The city has also seen luxurious “Golden Gujiyas” priced at Rs 50,000 per kilo, and record-setting shapes like heart-shaped or flower-decorated versions. However, the sheer size and cultural significance of this 2025 creation set it apart, captivating food enthusiasts and festival-goers alike. The gujiya, now a symbol of Lucknow’s festive pride, continues to sweeten India’s rich culinary tapestry.
