If you’re in the US, the new
iPhone 17 you’ll soon be holding will likely have taken shape in Bengaluru, not Beijing.
Apple is rewriting global supply chains where India is front and centre. It's also a clear reflection of how aggressively the company is trying to reduce its dependence on China.
Apple is currently producing the iPhone 17 across five factories in India and two of them have only recently started operations.
Between April and July, India exported $7.5 billion worth of iPhones – a figure that is already nearing the total $17 billion exported during the entire previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, iPhone sales in India jumped 20% last quarter.
Apple Hebbal: Third Retail Store
That's not all! Apple is also expanding its retail footprint in the country. Its third official store in India- Apple Hebbal, spread over 8000 square feet will open on September 2 in Bengaluru.
According to multiple sources, Apple plans to increase iPhone production to 60 million units this year from about 35-40 million units in 2024-25.
iPhone Sales Surge in India
Apple assembled 60 per cent more iPhones, worth an estimated USD 22 billion, in India in the year ended March 31, 2025.
Tim Cook Confirms US iPhones from India
The company's CEO Tim Cook, after the financial result announcement on July 31, said the majority of the iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 originated from India.
Cook, during the second-quarter earnings call, had announced that all iPhones sold in the US in the June quarter will be shipped from India.
Meeting Global Demand
According to an analysis by S&P Global, iPhone sales in the US were 75.9 million units in 2024, with March exports from India at 3.1 million units, suggesting a need to double shipments either through new capacity or redirecting shipments bound for the domestic market.
