What if someone told you an Australian international just became Indian to play for the Blue Tigers? It sounds like fiction, but it’s very real.

A Landmark Move for Indian Football

Ryan Williams, the 32-year-old winger from Perth, has officially taken Indian citizenship, making him eligible to represent the Indian national football team. Currently with Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, Williams has previously played for English clubs Fulham, Portsmouth, Oxford United, and Barnsley, as well as Perth Glory back home.

His connection to India runs deep, his mother hails from an Anglo-Indian family in Mumbai. And now, in a move that’s unprecedented in Indian football, Williams has chosen to swap his Australian passport for an Indian one, a decision that will endear him to the fans in his adopted country.

Because India doesn’t allow dual citizenship, this means he had to relinquish his Australian nationality, something no foreign-born footballer of his calibre has done before to play for India.

Joining a More Global Indian Camp

Williams won’t be the only new face in India’s upcoming national camp ahead of the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh. Also joining is Abneet Bharti, the Nepal-born defender currently playing top-flight football in Bolivia for Academia del Balompié Boliviano. Bharti, who once featured in Indian youth setups, has travelled the world, chasing his footballing dream.

Together, the two bring an international edge to a squad that’s beginning to look truly global, from Perth in Western Australia to the Andes in South America.

A Turning Point for the Blue Tigers

Williams’ move is more than a personal choice; it’s a symbolic moment for Indian football. And let’s just hope they can help Indian football regain its lost glory.
