Would You Like to Purchase a 1 Rupee 4G Plan? Yes, I didn't make that typo. In a surprise and aggressive move, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced what it terms the 'Azadi Ka Plan', a Freedom Offer offering users unlimited voice calls, 2GB of data per day on 4G, 100 SMS per day, and a new free 4G SIM, all for a mere Re 1. Coinciding with India's Independence Day celebrations, the plan is not merely about cutting costs, it's a declaration in the cutthroat telecom space.
BSNL's new scheme is tailored exclusively for fresh customers. Activated users get 2GB daily high-speed 4G data, free voice calling anywhere in India (even while roaming), and 100 SMS daily. The offer is for a complete 30 days, thus one of the cheapest proposals ever made in Indian telecommunication history. To make it even more enticing, BSNL is also giving a complimentary new 4G SIM card with each activation.
Even once the daily data limit is used up, customers will still receive internet browsing at a slower rate of 40kbps under BSNL's fair usage policy—guaranteeing uninterrupted basic connectivity.
There is a wee catch: this Freedom Offer applies only to new BSNL subscribers who get a new SIM between August 1 and August 31, 2025. Old customers are not in consideration. Users wanting to benefit must approach their local BSNL retailer or Common Services Centre (CSC), get the necessary KYC formalities done, and recharge the plan with only Re 1 to turn on the goodies.
This proposal comes on the heels of BSNL's launch of its countrywide 4G deployment, including the deployment of 1,00,000 4G towers across the nation. The initiative is in tandem with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India of the government as the network runs on India's own indigenous telecommunications technology, according to a Robert J Ravi, Chairman and MD of BSNL.
Even though competing private telecom behemoths such as Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea provide the same advantages at prices between ₹349 and ₹399, BSNL's ₹1 plan is obviously targeted towards capturing market share and serving unserved rural and low-end users.
In order to create buzz, BSNL announced the move through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

This social media campaign emphasizes the plan’s symbolic value as a step toward digital freedom for every Indian.
BSNL's Azadi Ka Plan may just be the cheapest and most effective telecom plan India has witnessed in years. By providing substantial benefits for a mere ₹1, BSNL is not only competing, it's revolutionizing. For Indians numbering in millions, particularly those stepping into the digital age for the first time, this is not just a plan, it's digital empowerment at the cost of a toffee.
