Canada was once again rocked by the actions of the dreaded Lawrence Bishnoi gang after they claimed responsibility for the killing of Indian-origin businessman Darshan Singh Sahasi and for firing at the house of Punjabi singer, Channi Nattan.
Gang member Goldy Dhillon, in a social media post, bragged about the reasons behind their actions. Dhillon claimed that the Abbotsford-based businessman-turned-politician was involved in illicit activities. The gang had demanded money from him but when Sahasi refused to pay, they killed him.
According to reports, Sahasi was shot dead right outside his house on Monday morning.
Sahasi was a popular figure within the Punjabi community in Abbotsford and Canada. Community leaders are outraged at his killing and have described this incident as a serious threat to the safety of Indian immigrants in Canada.
Furthermore, Goldy Dhillon also claimed responsibility for firing outside the house of Punjabi singer Channi Nattan. The warning shots were on account of Nattan’s growing closeness to fellow singer Sardar Khera - another of the gang’s extortion targets.
Dhillon warned that any singer or artist who works with or has links to Khera would be ‘responsible for their own loss’.
Remember, just last month, Canada listed the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity. This allows the federal government to seize property and freeze money owned by the group in the country.
Canada’s move comes at a time when relations with India had only just begun to improve.
Remember, Indo-Canadian diplomatic relations nose-dived in 2023 under the previous Trudeau administration. The PM Modi-led Indian government had strongly objected to the former PM accusing them of being involved in the fatal shooting of sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Vancouver.
