Want to whisper those sweet nothings into your bae’s ear… but he isn’t around? Well, ChatGPT might soon fill in. Basically, the AI that used to write your work emails is now ready for after-hours conversations.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has said that the next ChatGPT update will let it act more human, and “will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.” In a post on social media platform X, Altman said OpenAI had made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive” to make sure that the company was being careful with mental health issues.
However, Altman added that the creators of the Large Language Model (LLM) realise that the restrictions on ChatGPT have made it less useful or enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems. Altman went on to underline that despite ChatGPT becoming less enjoyable for some, OpenAI wanted to get it right, given the seriousness of the issue.
The OpenAI CEO went on to say that now that the company has been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and has new tools, it is going to be able to safely relax the restrictions on ChatGPT in most cases.
Once the changes are rolled out in a few weeks, OpenAI plans to put out a new version of ChatGPT. This version, according to Sam Altman, will allow people “to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!).”
So in a few weeks from now, if a user of the LLM wants ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT will be able to do it. However, Altman added that this will happen only if a user wants it, and not because the company wants to "usage-max" the platform.
While a lot will change in the coming weeks, there are even bigger changes in the pipeline for December. Sam Altman has said that in the last month of 2025, OpenAI will “roll out age-gating more fully” on ChatGPT.
He also promised that as part of the LLM pioneer’s “treat adult users like adults” principle, OpenAI will allow even more on ChatGPT, like erotica for verified adults.
