Jake Fraser-McGurk’s IPL 2025 campaign has gone from sizzle to fizzle, and fans are left scratching their heads. Just a year ago, the Australian opener was Delhi Capitals’ headline act, lighting up the league with a record-breaking strike rate of 234.04 and 330 runs in just nine matches—numbers that had statisticians rubbing their eyes in disbelief. If the ball was in the air, it was usually in the stands; his aerial strike rate was a jaw-dropping 410.

But this season, the script has flipped. In six matches, Fraser-McGurk has managed just 55 runs at a strike rate barely above 100. His highest score is a modest 38, and the swagger that defined his 2024 run seems to have evaporated. The most telling stat? He’s hit the ball in the air 12 times this season, and half of those have ended in dismissals—a dramatic reversal from last year’s fireworks.

So, what’s gone wrong? For starters, bowlers have done their homework. Instead of feeding him in the slot, they’ve kept it wide and out of his hitting arc, neutralizing his power game. It’s worked: Fraser-McGurk’s fearless approach now looks more like a gamble than a guarantee. He came into IPL 2025 on the back of a lean patch—just 382 runs in 24 innings since last season, averaging 15.9.

The pressure is mounting, and critics haven’t held back. Simon Doull called out his “lack of common sense” after a golden duck against Mumbai Indians, questioning his shot selection and patience. Even with a 110* in a pre-season practice match, the real games have been a different beast.

Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope. Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel insists the team is backing Jake, calling him a “match-winner” who just needs time to rediscover his spark. The franchise’s faith is clear—they spent ₹9 crore to retain him at the 2025 auction. For now, Fraser-McGurk’s IPL story is a cliffhanger: will he break free from this slump and remind everyone why he was last year’s breakout star? The next few games could decide whether this is just a sophomore slump or the start of a longer struggle.
