Indian cricket coach Gautam Gambhir is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, and this time, he didn’t hold back. On what was supposed to be a celebratory evening: his birthday and a series win for India, Gambhir’s press conference turned into an emotional outburst. His trigger? Former cricketers taking digs at 23-year-old pacer Harshit Rana.

The Spark That Lit the Fire

It all began when Ravichandran Ashwin remarked that he’d “love to sit in the selection meeting” to understand Harshit Rana’s repeated inclusion in the Indian squad. Soon after, Kris Srikanth took it a step further, calling Harshit the “only permanent member of the team.”

These comments didn’t sit well with Gambhir, who fired back strongly, saying,

“It’s shameful to personally target a 23-year-old. Harshit’s father isn’t an ex-chairman.” The press room fell silent. What was meant to be a simple Q&A became one of the most talked-about moments in Indian cricket this week.

Gambhir’s Fierce Defence

Gambhir went on to criticise ex-players for their growing tendency to chase social media traction.

“If you want views for your YouTube channels, say whatever you want about me. I can take it. But don’t pick on a kid.”

It was vintage Gambhir: direct, emotional, and fiercely protective of his players. The coach made it clear that this team stands by its youngsters, no matter how intense the outside noise gets.

The Harshit Rana Debate

Admittedly, Harshit Rana’s form has divided opinions. He went for 54 runs against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, but his overall record is promising: 10 wickets in 5 ODIs, 5 wickets in 3 T20Is, and a handful in Tests. While not earth-shattering, these numbers show potential. For Gambhir, that’s enough reason to back him publicly.

The Bigger Picture

In a cricketing world driven by narratives, Gambhir’s words stood out for their honesty. Coaches rarely go this far to shield a player. But for India’s fiery mentor, loyalty and fairness come first.

And if there’s one thing this episode proved, criticising Gambhir’s players is one thing; questioning their place is another. Because when you do that, the coach himself will walk out swinging.
