G. Krishnakumar, Former CMD of BPCL, spoke to Hook at Fortune India’s Best CEOs 2025 event. In a short conversation, he broke down his philosophy on clarity, leadership, and building principled companies.
Recognised for Keeping Things Simple
Asked how it felt to receive the honour, Krishnakumar’s response was straightforward: it felt “on top of the world.”For him, being recognised by Fortune carries weight but the moment is rooted in his belief in simplicity, not celebration.
Clarity Over Complexity
When asked about the one habit that keeps him focused every day, he didn’t hesitate: clarity of thought. He avoids unnecessary complexity and prefers to strip issues down to their essentials. That, he says, is what keeps decisions sharp and execution clean.
The One Thing He Never Delegates
For Krishnakumar, people decisions remain a leader’s responsibility. He emphasised that selecting the right team is non-negotiable. Once the right team is in place, he believes most organisational challenges fall into place naturally. Delegation works but not when it comes to choosing the people who drive the organisation.
Advice for the Next Generation of Builders
His message for young founders and future leaders is consistent with his philosophy: Have clarity of vision. Know exactly what you want to build. Avoid complexity. Keep it simple. According to Krishnakumar, simplicity isn’t just a style, it’s a strategy for building companies that are both profitable and principled.
