The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday was informed of the Home Ministry's notification regarding the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, with immediate effect. Dhankhar had submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday evening, citing health reasons.
However, political circles are abuzz with speculation about the real reasons behind the move. Just a few weeks ago, Dhankhar had expressed his intention to complete his five-year term.
With the Vice President, who is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, stepping down, Deputy Chairman Harivansh chaired the proceedings of the House on Tuesday.
Protest against Bihar SIR
Opposition MPs staged a protest in Parliament against the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in Bihar. Leaders including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav joined the demonstration in the Parliament House complex.
Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of carrying out the revision exercise to benefit the BJP-led NDA, calling it a backdoor attempt to rig the elections. The poll body has denied these allegations.
Presidential reference hearing
The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and all states on the Presidential reference, raising constitutional questions on whether timelines can be imposed for taking action on bills passed by state assemblies.
Observing that the issues raised in the reference will affect “the entire country”, a five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has given one week to respond. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for 29 July.
Gita Gopinath Quits IMF
Indian-American economist Gita Gopinath has decided to leave the IMF to rejoin the faculty at Harvard University. Gopinath joined the IMF in January 2019 as its Chief Economist, making history as the first woman to hold the post. After three years in that role, she was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022, becoming the Fund’s second-in-command.
Flat Tuesday on Dalal Street
Dalal Street ended the day almost unchanged, giving up early-session gains. The Sensex closed flat, just around the 82,200 mark. The Nifty also ended almost unchanged, slightly above 25,000.
