When 'Bridgerton' came to Netflix, it didn’t only make regency romance fashionable again — it also brought back an obsession with corsets. However, the silhouette of the 1800s, which was restrictive and boned, is replaced by that of Gen Z, which is all about freedom, creativity, and comfort.

From the ballroom to the boardroom

Corsets are no longer just a part of the wardrobe of characters in period dramas. The trend got a contemporary look from Kriti Sanon, who wore a blue denim corset with such style and charm that the look could be defined as casual chic. Janhvi Kapoor also did the same by matching her corset with a relaxed, everyday outfit — thus making the corset as understandable and wearable as the crop top, which is already popular.

What about Khushi Kapoor, who, with a Torani corset and a draped skirt for a fusion moment that is indistinct of culture, went completely desi? Suhana Khan kept her with a certain quiet grace and simplicity, making her yellow corset dress look like a classic yet new one.

Redefining the silhouette

It was also quite a show when Alia Bhatt decided to attract people’s attention with the combination of a corset and a blazer. The idea of the tightly "laced" one is now gone, and the concept is all business and power. Nowadays, corsets can also be found in softer materials, with stretch panels and the like, and some have the look of corsets without the lace-ups or boning, giving the wearer a certain structure but with no discomfort.

On the one hand, fashion brands such as Prada or Dior have reinvented the corset as a statement piece that can be worn as an additional layer.

It’s not so much about accentuating your waist with a corset but rather about showcasing who you are through your style.

Why we’re still obsessed

For Gen Z and millennials, corsets are more about being a means of expression than striving for perfection. They bring back the glamour of the past while being perfectly compatible with contemporary wardrobes. Just like 'Bridgerton', they are a mix of fantasy and reality, romantic, powerful, and unapologetically bold.

Therefore, whether it is worn over a white shirt, together with denim, or on a red carpet, the question is not if corsets are making a comeback. It is about when and how you will wear yours next.
