Vaibhav’s journey began in Bihar, a state not known for its cricketing infrastructure or support. Despite these challenges, his raw talent stood out during an inter-district senior tournament, earning him a spot at the BCCI U-19 one-day Challenger tournament. It was here that VVS Laxman, serving as a mentor and selector, first noticed Vaibhav’s composure and skill at the crease. But it wasn’t just his cricketing ability that caught Laxman’s eye-it was a moment of vulnerability. After being run out for 36 in one match, Vaibhav broke down in tears in the dressing room, devastated by what he saw as a missed opportunity.

Laxman’s response became a turning point. He approached the young cricketer and told him, “We don’t only see the runs here. We see people who have the skill for the long run.” These words, as recalled by Vaibhav’s coach Manoj Ojha, gave the teenager a renewed sense of belief and purpose. Laxman’s faith in Vaibhav didn’t stop there. Recognizing the limitations of Bihar’s cricketing scene, Laxman, along with Ojha, advocated for Vaibhav to get exposure beyond his home state.

Laxman selected Vaibhav for India’s U-19 quadrangular series which included the U-19 sides from England and Bangladesh, offering him invaluable experience on a bigger stage. Later, Laxman made a decisive move by recommending Vaibhav to Rahul Dravid, head coach of the Rajasthan Royals and renowned for nurturing young talent. Dravid took Vaibhav under his wing, allowing him to acclimatize to the professional environment before giving him his break in the IPL.

When an opportunity finally arose due to an injury in the Royals’ lineup, Vaibhav seized it. He made an immediate impact, hitting a six off his very first ball in the IPL and following it up with a quickfire 34 in his debut. Just days later, he made history with a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, smashing records and confirming his place as India’s next cricketing prodigy.

Vaibhav’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship. Without Laxman’s early recognition, encouragement, and guidance, Indian cricket might never have witnessed this extraordinary young talent shine so brightly.
