India’s eastern states are bracing themselves for Cyclone Montha. The IMD expects the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ tomorrow, Oct 28, when it is likely to make landfall.
Consequently, the Met department has issued heavy rain alerts for Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and other eastern states. Furthermore, tens of thousands have been evacuated from coastal areas and warnings have been issued for fishermen to move out and away from the sea.
CJI Gavai names his successor
In other news, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Monday recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor.
According to established convention, the CJI recommended Justice Kant, who is next in line for the role based on seniority, to the Union government. He will be eligible to assume office upon CJI Gavai’s retirement on Nov 23.
India and China resume direct flights after 4 years
Direct flights between India and China resumed on Monday as relations between the neighbours continue to thaw.
Remember, direct flights were operational between the two countries till early 2020. Flights were initially suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic but remained suspended in view of the eastern Ladakh border row.
Brazil and the US inch toward a trade deal
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is hopeful that the South American nation and the US could soon seal a trade deal. This after Lula described his meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit as “surprisingly good”.
Remember, along with India, Brazil was slapped with 50% tariffs by Trump - the highest level of tariff so far.
Shreyas Iyer admitted in Australian hospital ICU
And from the sports world - India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a Sydney hospital ICU after suffering internal bleeding during India’s third match against Australia.
Iyer took a brilliant catch running backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey, but appeared to have hurt his left rib cage in the process and was rushed to the hospital soon after.
Initially, Iyer was expected to be out of action for about three weeks, but the recovery period may now be longer.
