India sets the stage for vice presidential election | Hook News Wrap

Indian Members of Parliament will vote for a vice president on September 9. Reports say many are leaning towards the BJP-led NDA's pick CP Radhakrishnan, who is currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra. The other choice is B Sudershan Reddy, the candidate put forward by the Congress-led INDIA bloc.

Quick reminder: India elects its vice president via secret ballot -- an election that is left to the Members of Parliament and not the near-billion eligible voters.

The election is being held after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from his position in July this year. He became the third vice president to have resigned mid-term.

Auto manufacturers cut prices after GST rationalisation

Indian markets seem to be reacting positively to the revised GST structures announced by the government last week. Automobile manufacturers significantly cut down the prices of cars, with almost all big brands getting into action. On Monday, the Nifty index saw a jump of 3%, just days after the GST 2.0 announcement. Tata Motors shares jumped about 3% to trade over 700 rupees apiece. Mahindra & Mahindra too increased by 3% to trade over the 3,600 rupees mark.

Kyiv government buildings hit

Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began, targeting Kyiv with drones and missiles. On Sunday, officials confirmed at least two people were killed, including a mother and her 3-month-old child.

Ukraine's Air Force reported that 810 drones and decoys were used, with 747 drones and 4 missiles neutralized. Smoke was seen rising from Kyiv’s cabinet of ministers building, marking a significant escalation. Ukrainian leaders are calling for increased sanctions on Russia and stronger air defenses.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that with the record-breaking massive drone attack on Kyiv on Sunday Russia "is testing the world."

"Therefore, it is important that the statements of leaders, states, and institutions are followed up by strong actions – sanctions against Russia, against individuals associated with Russia, and strong tariffs and other restrictions on trade with Russia," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his nightly video address.

India are Asia champions

The Indian men's hockey team beat rivals South Korea in the final of the Asia Cup on September 7, registering their first title-winning stint in the tournament in eight years. India’s trophy cabinet now has four Asia Cups. The victory also assured India of a spot in the prestigious FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in the Netherlands and Belgium.
