In the world of cricket fandom, some stories are just pure magic, and this one takes the cake.
When Shubman Gill first came to Australia with Team India in 2021, he was a rising star, elegant, fearless, and full of promise. His unforgettable 91 at The Gabba helped India script one of their greatest Test victories ever, breaking Australia’s fortress and inspiring millions.
Among those millions was a die-hard fan from Punjab, who was so moved by Gill’s innings that when his son was born, he decided to name him after his hero, Shubman Gill. And here’s the twist: the fan’s surname was already Gill. So yes, the boy’s full name became Shubman Gill, just like the Indian Test and ODI captain himself.
Soon, destiny completed the circle, when the little boy got to meet his namesake, the real Shubman Gill, in New Zealand. And during India’s ongoing tour of Australia, senior journalist Vimal Kumar caught with the little boy and his family at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). It was a surreal and heartwarming moment, one that shows how deeply cricket connects people across generations.
Stories like these aren’t new in cricket. Sunil Narine was named after Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar, while Gavaskar’s own son Rohan Gavaskar was named after West Indian great Rohan Kanhai. But very few fans get to meet and be blessed by the player they were named after.
For the young Shubman Gill, it was a dream come true. And for the real Shubman Gill, it was a reminder of how far his journey has reached, from a boy with a bat in Punjab to a name that inspires a new generation.
