A Delhi court has convicted 13 people, including former IAS officer Narender Kumar and ex-Registrar of Cooperative Societies Gopal Dixit, in the ₹4,000 crore Safdarjung Cooperative Group Housing Society scam. The CBI investigation revealed how defunct housing societies were fraudulently revived using fake documents and forged memberships to illegally obtain subsidised DDA land meant for middle-class citizens.
Special Judge Prashant Sharma, while announcing sentences of two to five years, described corruption as a “cancer” that erodes public faith and the nation’s moral fabric. The verdict stands as a crucial reminder of India’s ongoing struggle against bureaucratic corruption and misuse of public trust. It reinforces the judiciary’s role in holding powerful officials accountable and ensuring that justice prevails in cases where governance, integrity, and public welfare are compromised.
