The IPL 2026 mini auction is just around the corner, and while fans are excited to see which rising stars and international icons attract big money, the flip side of the auction often gets overlooked — the players who don’t get picked. Every year, some big names surprisingly go unsold, and this season might be no different.
Steve Smith
The Australian legend finds himself in familiar territory. A legend in Test cricket, Smith’s T20 career has faded in recent years. He hasn’t played a T20I since February 2024 and managed just 137 runs in eight innings during The Hundred. Despite his vast experience, the lack of recent impact in the shortest format could once again keep teams away — especially considering he's gone unsold in the last three IPL auctions.
Anrich Nortje,
Once a go-to death bowler for franchises, is also facing uncertain ground. Back from injury, his recent performances haven’t inspired much confidence. In the first T20I against India, he gave away 41 runs in four overs and wasn’t even trusted with the new ball. With teams valuing form and fitness more than reputation, Nortje’s ₹2 crore base price might be too steep this time.
Jake Fraser-McGurk,
He lit up IPL 2024 but faded just as quickly in 2025 with only 55 runs from six games. Released by Delhi Capitals and carrying a ₹2 crore base price, his recent form raises serious doubts.
Josh Inglis
Despite a fantastic season with Punjab Kings last year, has already declared he won’t be available for the full season due to personal commitments. And in a tournament as high-intensity as the IPL, availability is non-negotiable.
Big names alone don’t guarantee a contract - especially in a mini auction where squads are tight and decisions razor-sharp. The 2026 auction could be a wake-up call for more than a few familiar faces.
