In Indonesia, nickel mining around Kabaena Island in Sulawesi has turned the sea red, sparking tensions between the island's indigenous people, who work in the mines, and the Bajau, nomadic seafarers whose livelihoods are threatened by the runoff.

Local environmental activists urge the authorities to strike a balance between preserving natural resources that the local populations depend on and providing new livelihood sources.
