Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has come out strongly in support of senior pacer Mohammad Shami, questioning the selectors’ decision to overlook him despite his current form and fitness. As India gears up for Test series against South Africa, Shami’s absence from the squad has raised several eyebrows, including Dada’s.
At a public event, Ganguly expressed surprise at Shami’s omission, stating, “I really don’t see any reason why he can’t keep playing Test matches, one-day cricket, and T20 cricket for India.” His remarks come at a time when India’s selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar and supported by new head coach Gautam Gambhir, have yet to recall Shami to the national setup.
Shami’s Red-Hot Domestic Form
Ganguly highlighted Shami’s dominant performances in the Ranji Trophy, where he led Bengal to crucial wins almost single-handedly. “Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit, and we saw in the three Ranji Trophy matches where he’s won Bengal on his own,” Ganguly said.
These performances underscore that Shami is not just fit but in peak rhythm, raising questions about the logic behind his exclusion. The right-arm pacer has been one of India’s most consistent match-winners in all formats, especially in overseas conditions.
Communication or Confusion?
Ganguly added that he hoped there was ongoing communication between Shami and the selectors but reiterated that based on merit, he should be part of the national side across formats.
"If you ask me, in terms of fitness and skill, it’s the Mohammad Shami we know. That skill is enormous."
India’s Selection Puzzle
While India continues to rotate and experiment with its pace attack, the decision to overlook an in-form senior like Shami has left many puzzled. Ganguly’s support only adds pressure on the selection committee to justify their choices.
