Trump threatens Baltimore and other Democratic-led cities

US President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy troops to Baltimore, the most populous city in the state of Maryland, escalating a clash with Governor Wes Moore. The remarks mark the latest flashpoint in Trump’s efforts to deploy National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities as part of what he calls a crackdown on crime.

US media reports suggest about 1,700 National Guardsmen are expected to mobilise in 19 states in the coming weeks.

Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at Russian nuclear plant

Moving on, Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on a nuclear plant that resulted in a blaze. The plant’s news service on Telegram said that the fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog - International Atomic Energy Agency - confirmed normal radiation levels near the nuclear plant in a post on X.

Russian officials declared that several power and energy facilities were targeted in the overnight strikes as the embattled nation of Ukraine celebrated its 34th Independence Day.

France refutes allegations of anti-Semitism by US envoy

Staying with Europe, France summoned US ambassador, Charles Kushner, after he wrote an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron alleging that Paris had failed to do enough to stem anti-Semitic violence.

Kushner published the open letter in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, in which he focused on France’s criticism of Israel and its plans to recognise a Palestinian state. The French Foreign Ministry, in a statement, firmly refuted the latest allegations labeling them “unacceptable”.

6 killed as Israel bombs Yemeni capital Sanaa

Shifting focus to the Middle East - the Israeli military on Sunday bombed the Yemeni capital Sanaa as tensions in the region continue to escalate amid Israel’s war on Gaza. At least six people were killed and 86 others were injured in the attacks, according to Yemeni media.

The Israeli strikes came two days after the Houthis claimed a missile launch against Israel as the Yemeni group aims to pressure Israel to end its atrocities and siege in Gaza.
