In line with international health protocols, the Jammu and Kashmir State Hajj Committee has launched a vaccination drive to ensure that all pilgrims receive the required vaccines before travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage.
The vaccination process is being carried out in scheduled time slots. Pilgrims are being called according to their serial numbers to avoid overcrowding and to complete the process in a systematic manner.
With people from across the world expected to gather in one place, there is a higher risk of infectious diseases spreading during the pilgrimage. Vaccination is a preventive step to reduce this risk and ensure that pilgrims are medically prepared for the journey.
As part of the drive, three vaccines are being administered. The first is the Quadrivalent Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine (QMMV), which is required for all pilgrims attending Hajj. The second vaccine is the Influenza vaccine, which is also being given, especially to pilgrims aged 66 years and above. In addition, two drops of the oral polio vaccine are being provided as a precautionary measure.
Dr. Nighat, District Immunisation Officer, explained the importance and scope of the initiative:
"The vaccines are being given to those who are going for the Hajj. We are giving three vaccines: one is the meningococcal vaccine, the second is the flu vaccine, and we are also giving two drops of the oral polio vaccine. These are being given for their safety, so that they remain protected there from these diseases. We are continuing this vaccination drive for three days. There is an additional quota of 150 people, plus 980 slots for our district, Srinagar."
The vaccination drive began on Monday and will continue until April 23. It is being conducted across different centres to ensure that all pilgrims scheduled to travel from the region are covered. Health officials are overseeing the process to ensure compliance with all protocols.
This year, the Hajj pilgrimage is expected to take place between June 4 and June 9. As the date approaches, health preparations such as this vaccination campaign are being prioritised to support the well-being of the pilgrims during their time in Saudi Arabia.
