When eggs come to mind, the first thing that likely pops up is an omelette. Simple, classic, and a staple for breakfast for centuries eggs and omelettes have always been around. But what if we were to tell you somebody elevated (maybe?) the humble omelette to the next level by incorporating mangoes into it?
That's precisely what a street food stallholder did, and it did incite quite the controversy among foodies. Where the stall is located is unclear, but it looks like this creation is stemming out of the capital – New Delhi. Currently, the jury is out on whether a mango omlette is a leg up from the regular ones we’ve come to love over the years.
The viral video featured a street vendor making a mango omelette like nobody's ever done before. The preparation begins with a humble foundation: the vendor breaks two eggs in a bowl and puts in the standard omelette fillers - onions, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander, salt and a mixture of spices. Once everything is well mixed, the wizardry begins.
Weird or wow: Mango paratha is the latest internet-dividing street food
Instead of the usual fillings such as mushrooms or cheese, this vendor inserts small chunks of peeled mango into the egg mixture. Once he has poured the eggs into a sizzling pan, he inserts the chunks on top and allows them to be cooked into the omelette. The second step is to flip the omelette and then add a dollop of tandoori mayonnaise, additional boiled eggs, chopped tomatoes, coriander and a pinch of spices.
Lastly, the vendor completes this peculiar dish with a topping of a drizzle of mayonnaise, fresh coriander and chilli flakes. The mango omelette is served with bread and a side of green chutney for added flavor. It's a peculiar take on the classic omelette, blending the richness of eggs with the sweetness of mangoes.
Gulab Jamun paratha: Ever tried this social media viral food trend?
Although some may view the mango omelette as a delicious and exotic mix, the feedback from the online culinary community was overwhelmingly negative. The video was deluged with comments, many of which swore in disbelief and distaste at the strange combination.
One user sarcastically commented, “RIP omelette,” clearly not impressed by the fruity addition. Another wrote, “Leave the mangoes alone, please,” voicing their concern about mixing a beloved fruit with eggs. There were even viewers questioning the vendor’s culinary skills, with one comment reading, “Cooking nhi aati. Sharam toh aati hogi (You don’t know how to cook. Must have shame at least).”

Fusion foods are not new to anyone and they tend to be contentious. From sushi burritos to cronuts, non-traditional food combinations can result in surprises or a culinary disaster. For some, the concept of combining fruit with eggs is just plain weird to contemplate. Others will never say no to something new and may discover the sweetness of mango giving a welcome contrast to the richness of the eggs.
So, would you like to try this combination?
