He started running at 89—and kept going past 100. Fauja Singh wasn’t just the world’s oldest marathoner; he was proof that it’s never too late to start over. Born from grief and fueled by grit, his journey redefined age, limits, and what it means to live with purpose.

Fauja Singh wasn’t just a runner, he was a global symbol of resilience, reinvention, and the limitless human spirit. Often referred to as “the world’s oldest marathon runner,” Singh’s story is as remarkable as it is inspiring. While most people slow down—or don’t even make it to that age, Fauja was just getting started. At 89, he tied his laces and began running towards history.

Yes, you read that right. Fauja Singh began running at 89 years old, and over the next decade, he completed nine full marathons, even after he had turned 100. His most famous achievement came in 2011, when at 100+, he became the first centenarian in the world to finish a full marathon, completing the Toronto Marathon in just over 8 hours.

A Journey Fueled by Grief and Transformed into Glory

Fauja’s journey into running wasn’t planned. It was born from personal tragedy. During a trip to India, he witnessed the sudden death of his son, Kuldeep—a loss that shattered him. Returning to the UK, Fauja fell into a deep depression. But life had other plans.

One day at a local Gurudwara, he met a group of old men who used to go for runs. That moment sparked something inside him. Through that chance encounter, he met Harmander Singh, who would become his coach, mentor, and close friend. With encouragement and discipline, Fauja transformed grief into grit—and grief into greatness.

The Records That Weren’t Recognized

Fauja Singh's achievements are staggering. Apart from the Toronto Marathon, he ran in major international races across London, New York, and Hong Kong. He also carried the Olympic torch for the 2012 London Olympics, cementing his status as a national treasure in the UK.

But despite all this, the Guinness World Records never officially recognized his records. Why? Because Fauja Singh didn’t have a birth certificate to prove he was born in 1911. Although his British passport lists his date of birth as 1 April 1911, Guinness required documented proof—which didn’t exist, since birth registrations in India only became mandatory in 1970.

A Legacy That Transcends Paperwork

Records or not, Fauja Singh’s legacy is untouchable. As a child, he couldn’t walk properly until the age of five. And yet, more than a century later, he ran with the determination of a champion. He showed the world that it’s never too late to start, to heal, or to dream.Fauja Singh passed away, but his story continues to inspire millions. Whether you're 19 or 90, his life proves that age is just a number—and the human spirit doesn’t retire.
