No more monster willows - Why are umpires checking bats in IPL?

No more monster willows - Why are umpires checking bats in IPL?

With modern batters wielding slabs of wood so meaty that even edges fly into the crowd, the BCCI said “Enough is enough!” Time to level the playing field.
You’ve probably noticed something unusual this IPL—no, not that bowlers are not letting batters score big that easily or that Dhoni’s hair is somehow reverse-ageing—but umpires checking bats before players even take guard. Yup, it’s not a lucky charm inspection, it’s the Bat Gauge Test, cricket’s version of airport security.
So, what’s with this triangular tool that looks like it belongs in a geometry box but umpires are using them for strange bat tests in IPL these days?
Well, with modern batters wielding slabs of wood so meaty that even edges fly into the crowd, the BCCI said “Enough is enough!” Time to level the playing field. No more cheat codes disguised as cricket bats.
Enter: The Bat Gauge Test—a no-nonsense plastic triangle that bats must pass through. If your bat’s too thick? Sorry boss, swap it or sit down. It’s literally a “fit in or get out” situation.
But there’s science behind this. According to the MCC Law—yes, the OG cricket rulebook—here are the legal limits for your blade:
  • Depth: 2.64 inches
  • Width: 4.25 inches
  • Edge Thickness: 1.56 inches
  • Bulge: 0.20 inches
Exceed even one of these, and boom—you’re out (your bat, not you, thankfully).
And guess what? The gauge has already claimed some big names.
  • KKR’s big boys, Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje—caught red-handed.
  • And just recently, Riyan Parag from Rajasthan Royals joined the chunky-bat club.
Surprisingly, this isn’t a brand-new rule. In the earlier IPL days, the fourth umpire did random checks a day before the game—quietly, behind the scenes. But loopholes galore made it easy for oversized bats to sneak through. Now? It’s all happening live, right before your eyes. One swipe of the Bat Gauge and your bat’s future is decided
What happens if a bat fails the test?
As of now, there are no fines, bans, or suspensions in case a bat fails the test. Just a gentle, slightly embarrassing, “please change your bat” moment on live TV.
Moral of the story?
You can hit sixes, but not with a refrigerator door.
