Apple has always moved at its own pace when it comes to new tech, and the camera department is no exception. But it looks like they’re finally ready to level up. According to a leak from tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Apple is currently testing a 200MP camera sensor for future iPhones. And if the rumours are on point, the iPhone 18 Pro could be the one to bring this massive camera upgrade to life.
So far, Apple’s highest camera resolution is 48MP, seen on the iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro. Jumping straight to 200MP would be a bold move — and a major shift in Apple’s camera strategy.
What a 200MP iPhone camera could actually do
A 200MP sensor on the iPhone 18 Pro would mean sharper images, next-level detail, and way more flexibility with cropping, digital zoom, and printing. It’s the kind of upgrade that could seriously close the gap between Apple and Android when it comes to mobile photography.
Apple hasn’t revealed who’s building the sensor or how it’ll be integrated, but just the idea of this being in testing shows they’re finally paying attention to megapixel bragging rights.
Apple currently uses Sony’s sensor for the iPhone. However, they have been planning to switch to other providers for some time. Interestingly, Samsung has made several versions of its 200MP ISOCELL HP sensors.
That said, don’t expect to see it on the iPhone 17 Pro. According to current rumours, the 2025 models will stick to an all-48MP setup. The 200MP sensor could make its debut in 2026 with the iPhone 18 Pro — but that’s still speculation.
Apple vs Samsung: the megapixel race is heating up
While Apple’s just getting started, Android brands like Samsung and Vivo have already gone all-in. Samsung has used a 200MP sensor since the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and continued the trend with the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra. Vivo’s latest X200 Pro also comes with a 200MP telephoto camera. Apple might be late to the party, but if they’re coming, they’re coming in hot — and on their own terms.
iPhone 18 camera rumours hint at big changes ahead
Whether or not the iPhone 18 Pro 200MP camera actually launches in 2026, one thing’s clear — Apple is finally testing the waters. And if history’s any clue, they’re not entering the megapixel war without a plan.
