Elon Musk is at it again. This time, he’s bringing us one step closer to a sci-fi future where the blind could actually see again. His brain-chip company, Neuralink, is developing a groundbreaking device called Blindsight, and it’s set to change the game for people who’ve never experienced sight.
Musk dropped this bombshell during a recent Town Hall in Wisconsin, revealing plans to implant the first Blindsight device in a human by 2025, and eventually give users with the Blindsight BCI, ultrahuman vision. It’s a bold claim, but given Musk’s track record, we’re not exactly shocked.
Low-res vision will be the first step
Now, before you start imagining crystal-clear vision, Musk kept things realistic. The first version of Blindsight will give low-resolution vision—think retro Atari graphics. Not the stuff of high-def movies, but for someone who’s been blind their whole life, this could be a total game-changer. Musk was quick to add that this is just the beginning.
Over time, Blindsight will improve, eventually giving users vision that might even be better than what humans are capable of. Yeah, you read that right—superhuman sight. So while it may start off a little rough around the edges, this tech could become something mind-blowing.
FDA's big approval and what it means
Here’s where things get even more interesting: the FDA has given Blindsight a “breakthrough” designation. That’s a huge deal because it means the FDA is fast-tracking the device due to its potential to treat life-changing conditions.
But before you get too hyped, experts are reminding us that it’s still not a cure for blindness. It just means Neuralink’s making serious progress and could be on the fast track to bringing this tech to the public.
If everything goes according to plan, Blindsight could redefine what it means to live with blindness. We’re talking about restoring sight for those who thought it was impossible. So yeah, we’re pretty stoked to see where this goes—and we bet you are too.
