Why is this an important update?
Earlier, if you wanted to get your PAN card made, it had to be offline and involved a lot of paperwork. But NSDL or the National Securities Depository Limited has made it simple and paperless for us. Now you can not only apply for the card, but you can also update details like photos, signatures and more.
Step 1: Visit the official PAN card portal
Start by opening your browser and typing “Apply for PAN card”. You’ll see multiple options, but click on the official government-approved site
Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL.
Once you’re on the portal, click on “New Application”.

Select the new PAN option as a first time user.

If you already have a PAN card and want to make changes or corrections, select the last option.
Next, choose your applicant category (Individual, Company, etc.) and begin filling in your basic details, such as name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email ID.
Step 2: Choose how you want to submit documents.
Before entering personal details, you’ll see three submission options:

Paperless through Aadhaar (without signature)

Online form submission with offline courier verification
If you’re applying for the first time, you need to choose the second option, because it will keep your documents aligned and there will no extra step added.
Next, you need to fill in the last digits of your Aadhaar number, your full name, and your gender. There will be a one more step which says, ‘If you’ve never been known by another name’, go for no.
Step 3: Enter contact and address details
Next, provide your father’s and mother’s names, and select which name should appear on your PAN card. Then click Next.
Now, choose your source of income (for most, this will be your salary), and select your address of communication (usually residence). Fill in your full address, phone number, and email ID.
When asked about a “Representative Assessee”, select No, unless you have an authorised representative handling your tax affairs.
You’ll then need to fill in your Area Code (AO Code). If you don’t know it, simply search by your city or district name on the portal and select the suggested option.
Step 4: Upload photos and signature
